Shamua
Rupicarpa rupicarpa
The main problem for the species is poaching. The
shamua is very vulnerable and easy to shoot with long-range
weapons, while they are up on the rocky hills – they
feel safe there and do not run to escape danger. If
death rates caused by humans decrease, the numbers
of shamua populations will be easily restored. The
Pirin species is a pure representative of the sub-species
Balkan shamua, typical for the southern parts of the
Balkan Peninsula (Rupicarpa rupicarpa balcanica) .
Due to its limited
distribution and the negative factors that are typical
not only for our country, the Balkan shamua is endangered
as a whole. So it is of growing importance to pay
maximum efforts to conserve such a pure population,
preserved in its natural environment.
