Glittering Ibis
Plegadis falcinellus
An endangared species that is included in the book
"Endangered birds in Europe".
In the last few years
between 100 and 700 couples in 5 to 9 colonies were
spotted. The biggest colonies can
be observed in Bourgas lake and lake Mandra(about
181 in nests 1977 ,this number changing every year).
The ususla habitat
for this bird are fresh and semi-salt lakes, swamps
with different sizes. Forests that surround a bay
and islands on the Danube are also prefered by this
species. The feeding areas are often 15 to 20 km distant
from the nesting sites.
In Bulgaria it flies
for the spring and it nests here. When the little
birds cn already fly(about the middle of may) they
fly away and wander about the wet lands of the Bulgarian
Black sea coast.
